BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Andrew Hayles scored 23 points and Alabama State defeated Alabama A&M 70-58 in the first round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday night.

The top-seeded Hornets (20-9) shot 48.8 percent from the field (22 of 45), while Alabama A&M shot 31.6 percent (19 of 60).

Rashad Provitt scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Alabama State, and Brandon Brooks added 15 points.

Trant Simpson paced the eighth-seeded Bulldogs (8-19) with 28 points. Jonathan Belt and Cornelius Hester and added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Hornets led 36-17 at halftime en route to their third win over the Bulldogs this season, taking an 87-43 contest on Feb. 14 and winning 69-57 on Jan. 17.

The Hornets play the winner of Thursday's Arkansas-Pine Bluff-Southern matchup on Friday night in the next round.
