Brandon Paul scores 18, all from beyond arc, to lift Illinois in season opener
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- A year ago Brandon Paul started his college career with two big games that powered Illinois to wins before sliding back to the bench and mostly watching the Illini wade through a disappointing season that ended in the NIT.On Monday night, Paul replayed a little of that history, scoring 18 points to lead Illinois (No. 16 ESPN/USA Today, No. 13 AP) to a season-opening 79-65 win over UC-Irvine.The trick now, he said, is to avoid a repeat."It felt like deja vu for me," the sophomore said. "This year the main thing is to stay consistent. I don't want to have a few good games and then slack off the next few games."
• Illinois won its 12th straight season opener and improved to 41-7 in home openers at Assembly Hall.
• The Fighting Illini have won 12 straight nonconference home games.
• Brandon Paul led Illinois in scoring with 18 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the 3-point line. The six 3-pointers were a career high for Paul.
• UC Irvine fell to 20-26 all time in season openers.
