Tied at 60 with 2:34 to play, Kelvin Martin made a jump shot, followed by a three-point play to put the Buccaneers (1-1) up for good, 65-60, with 36 seconds remaining.
Martin also finished with 12 points for Charleston Southern, which shot 50 percent from the field (27 of 54), and 60 percent in the second half (15 of 25).
Wells, who had 19 points, gave the Bulldogs a 38-32 lead on a layup with 16:40 to play. Charleston Southern then scored six straight to tie it on Mitchell's free throw with 15:19 remaining.
