EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Shawn Atupem scored five of his 18 points in overtime and Mount St. Mary's (Md.) edged Savannah State 68-62 Saturday night.
Tied 53-53 after regulation, the Mountaineers' Lamar Trice had a steal 5 seconds into overtime and Julian Norfleet hit a 3 at the other end. The Tigers (1-4) then turned it over again, and Atupem made a three-point play. Josh Castellanos and Trice hit free throws, capping an 8-0 run and putting the Mountaineers up 61-53 with 2:50 remaining.
Mount St. Mary's then made 7-of-10 free throws the rest of the way to seal its first win of the season.
Mount St. Mary's led 28-20 at halftime, but Savannah State opened the second half on an 11-1 run. Jovonni Shuler's dunk capped the spurt and gave the Tigers their first lead of the game, 31-29, with 14:52 left.
