PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Freshman Gilvydas Biruta scored a career-high for the third straight game, scoring 20 points to lead Rutgers to a 66-54 win over New Jersey Institute of Technology on Wednesday night.
Jonathan Mitchell had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Mike Coburn added 13 points for the Scarlet Knights (4-2), who have won all four meetings with NJIT (1-4) and improved to 4-0 at home this season. The Highlanders got 16 points from Jheryl Wilson and 10 from Isaiah Wilkerson.
Rutgers led the entire game but could not put NJIT away until the final 7 minutes. Leading 49-45, the Scarlet Knights made six straight free throws and got a putback from Mike Poole for a 57-45 advantage with less than 5 minutes left.
NJIT got no closer than nine from that point and Rutgers opened its biggest leads of the night at 64-50 and 66-52.
Biruta shot 6 for 8 from the field and had seven rebounds.
