SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Derek Needham scored 15 points to help Fairfield squeak out a 41-39 victory over Savannah State on Thursday night.
Joshua Montgomery's layup with 1 second to go cut the Fairfield lead to 41-39, but time expired before the Tigers had a chance to foul.
The Stags shot just 13 of 47 from the floor (27.7 percent), including 2 for 11 from the 3-point line and missed 12 of 25 free throws (52 percent).
Fairfield led 18-13 at halftime after the Tigers managed to shoot only 4 for 16 from the field in the first half (25 percent).
Montgomery scored 13 points to lead Savannah State (1-8) and Smith grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Neither team had more than one player in double figures.
