ATLANTA -- Flenard Whitfield scored 17 points and hit the game-winning basket with 1 second left as Western Michigan rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat Georgia State 61-59 on Saturday night.

The Broncos (4-4), who trailed 54-44 with 8:31 left, used a 13-2 run to pull ahead 57-56 with 1:46 to play on a Whitfield jumper.

Matt Stainbrook added a layup with 36 seconds left to make it 59-56.

Georgia State's Brandon McGee tied the game with a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left, then Western Michigan called time out to set up Whitfield's final shot.

It was the fourth straight game in which the Panthers (3-4) have gone down to the final seconds of regulation, and the third they lost.

Stainbrook and Demetrius Ward added 14 points each for the Broncos, who shot only 36.2 percent from the field (21 of 58), but made 18 of 22 free throws.

McGee led Georgia State with 16 points.
