Papa Dia's double-double helps SMU clip McMurry

12/18/2010 - SMU Mustangs

ABILENE, Texas -- Papa Dia had 19 points and 15 rebounds as SMU held on for a 70-67 victory at Division III McMurry on Saturday night.

The visit by the Mustangs (6-4) is believed to be just the third time a Division I school has played at a Division III opponent. The Redlands (Calif.) hosted Villanova in 2003; Occidental (Calif.) College welcomed SMU last season.

Jaden Isler, Steven Jones and Derek Sumpter scored 14 points each for McMurry (6-4), which led by 12 points early. But SMU came back and never trailed after the 9:04 mark of the first half.

Isler's jumper cut the deficit to 68-65 with 42 seconds to play, but the Mustangs managed to keep possession -- and the clock running -- until six seconds remained. Both teams hit two free throws each afterward, with Jeremiah Samarrippas' pair giving SMU its winning cushion.

Overall, McMurry held its own inside, outrebounding the Mustangs 39-31. Both teams had 28 points in the paint.
