ABILENE, Texas -- Papa Dia had 19 points and 15 rebounds as SMU held on for a 70-67 victory at Division III McMurry on Saturday night.
The visit by the Mustangs (6-4) is believed to be just the third time a Division I school has played at a Division III opponent. The Redlands (Calif.) hosted Villanova in 2003; Occidental (Calif.) College welcomed SMU last season.Jaden Isler, Steven Jones and Derek Sumpter scored 14 points each for McMurry (6-4), which led by 12 points early. But SMU came back and never trailed after the 9:04 mark of the first half.Isler's jumper cut the deficit to 68-65 with 42 seconds to play, but the Mustangs managed to keep possession -- and the clock running -- until six seconds remained. Both teams hit two free throws each afterward, with Jeremiah Samarrippas' pair giving SMU its winning cushion.Overall, McMurry held its own inside, outrebounding the Mustangs 39-31. Both teams had 28 points in the paint.
