Florida Atlantic 60, Louisiana-Monroe 58

MONROE, La. -- Raymond Taylor scored 20 points and Florida Atlantic held on to beat Louisiana-Monroe 60-58 in Sun Belt Conference play on Sunday night.

The Owls (8-5, 2-0) led 22-6 with eight minutes remaining in the opening half and entered halftime with a 32-26 advantage.

Tommie Sykes hit two free throws with 43 seconds left to play, pulling the Warhawks within two, 60-58.

After stealing the ball from Alex Tucker with 25 seconds to go, Sykes was fouled by Brett Royster and stepped to the free-throw line with 0.2 seconds left.

Sykes missed the first attempt and intentionally missed the second, but the Warhawks (3-9, 0-1) couldn't come up with the tying basket.

Fred Brown scored 18 points to lead Louisiana-Monroe, while Sykes and Hugh Mingo added 11 points apiece.

Florida Atlantic, which has now won five of its last six games, shot 23 of 42 from the floor (54.8 percent).
