OMAHA, Neb. -- Gregory Echenique scored 16 points and Creighton beat Western Illinois 60-47 Monday night.
Kenny Lawson Jr. added 10 points for the Bluejays (7-4), who won their third straight.
The Leathernecks (5-6), playing for the first time since Dec. 11, scored only 17 points in the first half and were held under 50 for the first time this season. Kaimarr Price led them with 15 points and nine rebounds. Matt Lander also scored 15.
After taking an 11-point lead into halftime, Creighton had its advantage trimmed to 44-37 with 9:29 to play. But the Bluejays responded with eight straight points, including two 3s, and led by double digits the rest of the way.
Creighton was only 3 of 19 from 3-point range but hit 20-of-33 shots from inside the arc.
After Western Illinois tied it at 11, Kaleb Korver scored five straight points to give Creighton the lead for good.
