CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Demond Watt scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead Texas A&M-Corpus Christi over Montreat College 84-77 on Thursday in the consolation game of the Dr. Pepper Classic.
The Islanders (5-8) led 37-25 with 2:26 remaining in the opening half, but an 11-4 run pulled Montreat to within five, 41-36, at halftime.
The Cavaliers (4-8) trailed 55-50 after a 3-pointer from Cameron Hayes with 12:54 left to play. But the Islanders went on a 23-14 run to extend the lead to 78-64 -- their largest lead of the game.
Hayes finished with 16 points to lead Montreat, which competes in Division II of the NAIA. LaBris Adams added 13 points, Matt Rushing and Steve McBorrough had 11 apiece and Christian Tonkins scored 10.
