PORTLAND, Ore. -- Phillip Thomas scored a career-high 29 points, including 19 in the second half, as Portland State defeated Sacramento State 86-80 on Saturday night.

Melvin Jones and Charles Odum each had 17 points for the Vikings (11-10, 4-5 Big Sky), who beat the Hornets for the eighth straight time.

Sultan Toles-Bey led Sacramento State (5-16, 2-8) with 18 points while Walter Jackson chipped in 16 points.

The Vikings broke open a close game midway through the first half with a 17-4 run that put them ahead 27-12 after Jones connected on the second of his four first-half 3-pointers.

The Hornets, who trailed by as many as 18 points, closed to within five points late in the game, but Jones made a dunk with 32 seconds remaining put Portland State ahead 85-78 and seal the win.
