HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- R.L. Horton scored 20 and Southern Miss erased a double-digit second half deficit to beat Conference USA-leading UTEP 64-51 Wednesday night.

Southern Miss freshman guard D.J. Newbill scored 15 and grabbed 16 rebounds, including a slam dunk on a put-back in the second half, which sparked a 20-4 run.

The Eagles (19-6, 8-4) took a 46-45 lead, their first of the game, with 7:12 to go on a three-point play by Gary Flowers, who finished with 13 points.

UTEP forward Claude Britten scored 21 to lead all scorers.

UTEP (19-6, 7-3) shot 50 percent (13 of 26) in the first half, but went just 11 of 39 from the field (28.2 percent) in the second.

The win was the fifth in six games for Southern Miss, which is one game in the loss column behind new conference leader Memphis.
