GARLAND, Texas -- Alabama State completed a day of upsets in the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament semifinals on Friday, knocking off top-seeded Texas Southern 73-66.
The fourth-seeded Hornets (16-17) advance to the championship game Saturday against sixth-seeded Grambling State, which defeated No. 2 Jackson State in the other semifinal Friday.
Alabama State, which has won 10 of its last 11 games, had five players in double figures: Ivory White scored 17 points, Tremayne Moorer 14, Kenderek Washington 13, Jeff Middlebrooks 11 and Tramaine Butler 10.
Harrison Smith had 24 points for Texas Southern (19-12), which trailed by as many as 19 points in the first half.
The two teams combined to shoot 76 free throws -- Alabama State was 28 for 42 and Texas Southern 22 for 34.
