UNCASVILLE, Conn. -- Michael Culpo scored 14 points and Julian Boyd scored all 10 of his in the first half as Long Island University won its first game this season, defeating Radford 81-59 Saturday night at the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic.
The Blackbirds (1-3) shot 57.7 percent (15 of 26) in the first half, which they closed with an 8-0 run for a 35-23 lead.They improved to 61.5 percent (16 of 26) in the second half. A 3-pointer by Brandon Thompson increased Long Island's lead to 59-37 with 11:24 remaining, and it never led by less than 20 the rest of the way.Culpo got 12 of his points by making 4 of 5 3-pointers. Boyd also added 10 rebounds. Jamal Olasewere added 12 points for the Blackbirds, and C.J. Garner and Kenny Onyechi scored 11 each.Jareal Smith scored 10 points, the only Highlanders (3-2) player in double figures.
