CLINTON, S.C. -- Andre Jones had 24 points, including knocking down a big 3-pointer with 51 seconds left in the game to lead Winthrop past Presbyterian 59-56 on Thursday night in the Big South Conference opener for both teams.
The Eagles (2-5) had their largest lead of the game at 49-42, but the Blue Hose (3-4) didn't fold.
After missing all of its first 18 3-point attempts, Khalid Mutakabbir finally connected for Presbyterian with 2:04 left to play to cut Winthrop's lead to 52-51.
Pierre Miller tied the game with a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:31 remaining. That set up the eventual game-winning shot by Jones.
Winthrop held Presbyterian to 36.7 percent from the floor (18 of 49) and 2 of 21 from long range (9.5 percent). Winthrop also limited the Blue Hose's preseason All-Conference pick A'Lonzo Coleman to eight points. He came in averaging 15.5 per game.
