CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Durand Scott scored 16 points to lead Miami to an 83-75 victory over Massachusetts on Saturday.
Scott scored all of his points on free throws as he finished 0-for-6 from the field but made 16-of-18 free throw attempts. Scott also had six assists and six rebounds.
The Hurricanes (5-2) overcame a Minutemen comeback and clinched the win on Kenny Kadji's slam dunk with 24 seconds remaining for an 81-74 lead.
Massachusetts had three attempts to cut a 79-74 deficit under two minutes but Sean Carter missed two free throws, Chaz Williams' running jumper fell off the rim and Kadji blocked Carter's short field goal attempt with 1:31 left.
Williams scored 22 points to lead the Minutemen (6-3).
Williams converted four free throws and Raphiael Putney scored two free throws as The Minutemen rallied from a 73-64 deficit and cut the Miami lead to 73-70 with 4:29 left.
Williams' jumper with 2:36 left again cut the Miami lead to 77-74. Scott converted two free throws with 2:01 left and pushed the Hurricanes' advantage to 79-74.
Massachusetts rallied from its second 11-point deficit early in the second half with seven unanswered points. Carter's dunk with 11:59 remaining capped the run and got the Minutemen within 50-46.
Grant and Trey McKinney Jones scored five points each and Scott converted 5-of-6 free throws as Miami outscored Massachusetts, 17-1, and took the lead for good during a 7:56 stretch late in the first half. Grant's corner 3-pointer with 1:45 remaining capped the run and gave the Hurricanes a 39-26 lead.
The Minutemen's field goal scoring drought ended on Carter's dunk with 1:31 remaining. Massachusetts missed five field goal attempts and committed three turnovers during the Hurricanes' spurt.
Jesse Morgan's jumper with 39 seconds remaining cut Miami's lead to 41-31 at halftime.
The Hurricanes twice had seven-point leads in the opening four minutes of the first half but the Minutemen kept the deficit within two possessions.
Williams' second of consecutive 3-pointers gave Massachusetts a 25-22 lead with 8:41 left.
