STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- Al Rapier scored 17 points and Stony Brook held off Vermont in the second half for a 65-59 win on Monday night in the America East Conference opener for both teams.
The Seawolves (6-6) led 32-25 at halftime, before Vermont opened the second half on a 12-4 run. The Catamounts (6-9) went up 37-36 after a 3-pointer by Clancy Rugg with 15:45 to play.
Stony Brook answered on a 14-5 run, holding Vermont without a field goal until 2:55 remaining. Bryan Dougher's jump shot capped the Seawolves' run for a 50-42 lead with 6:55 to go.
The Seawolves shot 44 percent from the field (22 of 50), and outscored Vermont 28-14 in the paint.
Dave Coley added 15 points for Stony Brook, and Dougher finished with 14. It was Stony Brook's seventh straight home win.
