DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Mikel Trapp scored a career-high 33 points and Bethune-Cookman used the best shooting performance in school history to beat South Carolina State 91-59 Monday night.
The Wildcats hit 29 of 41 from the floor and 15 of 18 from 3-point range, setting school records for both field goal percentage (70.7) and 3-point field goal percentage (83.3). The former topped the school's previous mark of 63.5 percent -- which was set against Stetson in 2012. The latter tied BYU and Manhattan for the best 3-point percentage in the nation this season on more than 10 attempts.Bethune-Cookman (5-20, 3-7 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) used a 22-4 run, during which the team hit four 3-pointers, to open up a 24-9 lead with about 9 minutes to play in the first half.A 3-pointer by Trapp nearly 2 1/2 minutes later sparked 13-0 spurt, extending the Bethune-Cookman advantage to 26 with just fewer than 4 minutes before the break.BCU took a 48-22 lead into halftime and led by as many as 36 in the second half.Trapp was nearly perfect shooting, making 9 of 10 from the field, 7 of 7 from 3-point range and 8 of 9 from the free throw line. His effort from behind the arc set a single-game school record for 3-point field goal percentage.Trapp didn't score when the two teams met on Jan. 20.Malik Jackson added 19 points and Tony Kynard finished with 10 points and five assists in the win.Jordan Smith paced SCSU (8-14, 4-5) with 10 points.
