    Fairleigh Dickinson defeats Rutgers 73-72

    Associated Press

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Matt MacDonald hit a 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 25.8 seconds left that put Fairleigh Dickinson ahead to stay in a 73-72 win Rutgers Tuesday night in an NIT Season Tip-Off consolation game.

Sidney Sanders had 22 points and Mustafaa Jones added 21 for the Knights (2-6), who snapped a six-game losing streak and defeated Rutgers (4-4) for just the second time in 11 meetings. FDU's only other win over the Scarlet Knights came on Dec. 1, 1993.

J.J. Moore had a career-high 26 points for the Scarlet Knights, who are now off until Dec. 4 after playing five games in nine days. D'Von Campbell added 13 points and Wally Judge had 10 before fouling out.

Rutgers played without leading scorer and rebounder Kadeem Jack (15.6 points per game, 7.9 rebounds per game), who sat out with a sore lower right leg.

Trailing 53-44 with 11 minutes remaining, Rutgers went on 21-10 run for a 65-63 lead with 3:36 remaining. MacDonald hit a 3-pointer to regain the lead for the Knights before a Judge dunk and two Campbell foul shots put the Scarlet Knights ahead 69-66.

Sanders hit two foul shots to pull FDU within 69-68 with 1:19 remaining. Jerome Seagears missed a shot for Rutgers and FDU did not call timeout. Sanders then kicked a pass out to MacDonald, who swished a 3-pointer to put FDU up 71-69.

After a Scarlet Knights timeout, Moore got the ball and dribbled to the foul line, pump faked and missed a jumper. FDU's Malachi Nix grabbed the rebound that led to a lay-up by Jones with three seconds left.

A 3-pointer by Seagears at the buzzer made it a one-point game.

FDU won its first game against a Division I opponent this year, as its only other victory came against Division II Caldwell on opening night.

FDU took its only lead of the first half when a 3-pointer by Mathias Seilund and a three-point play by Sanders gave the Knights an 18-16 advantage.

Rutgers responded with 10 straight points to open its second eight-point advantage of the half at 26-18. The Knights continued to hang around and used a 7-3 run to pull within 34-31 at intermission.

Fairleigh Dickinson stayed close despite shooting 34.8 percent (8-for-23) and getting outrebounded 19-15 in the half. Rutgers hurt itself with nine turnovers.
