TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Drew Weatherford will start at quarterback for Florida State against UCLA in the Emerald Bowl, coach Bobby Bowden said Thursday.
Florida State (6-6) will face UCLA (7-5) on Dec. 27.
Bowden had remained mum about the position after both Weatherford and Xavier Lee struggled toward the end of the season. But after watching practice this week, he has decided to stick with the more experienced Weatherford.
"I have watched them all week. I wanted to let them compete all week and see if I thought there ought to be a change. After practicing all week I still think he ought to be starting," Bowden said.
Bowden had not told Weatherford of his decision, and the redshirt sophomore was relieved when he found out.
"I am glad I have another opportunity," Weatherford said. "I am looking forward to taking advantage of it. We have had great practices [this week]. It has been easy to concentrate and just play football."
Weatherford has thrown for 1,829 yards and 11 touchdowns this season but has also thrown 10 interceptions.
"It is going to be important for me to have good pocket presence and to be decisive, know my reads, and to move the ball," Weatherford said.
