1970s
Woody Hayes/Bo Schembechler

This was no mere rivalry. From 1969-78, Michigan and Ohio State gave us the stuff of Shakespearean drama. Bo Schembechler played for Woody Hayes at Miami (Ohio) and coached for him at Ohio State. In 1969, Schembechler became head coach of Hayes' archrival Wolverines. In that first season, Michigan upset No. 1 Ohio State, 24-12. The Rose Bowl and Big Ten championship may have been the annual stakes, but those goals only began to describe what drove these coaches, alike in so many ways. When Ohio State fired Hayes in 1978, Schembechler led their personal rivalry, 5-4-1 -- or did he? That 10-10 tie in 1973 sent the Buckeyes, not the Wolverines, to Pasadena.
