A former Oklahoma quarterback, Royal helped shape the Longhorns into one of the nation's most consistent winning programs. After inheriting a 1-9 team in 1956, he led the Longhorns to a Sugar Bowl berth the following year. It was the first of 16 bowl trips during his 20-season career. His coaching record at Texas was 167-47-5 -- the best mark in the nation over that period. His team claimed three national titles and 11 Southwest Conference titles, including a record six-straight conference titles from 1968 to 1973. Upon retiring after the 1976 season, Royal said, "I didn't need to have my picture taken again, and I didn't need another trophy. Life's been good to me." -- Tim Griffin
