Nebraska pulled within 31-30 of Miami with :48 to play in the 1984 Orange Bowl. Huskers coach Tom Osborne knew an extra point would mean his first national title. But he didn't want to win it with a tie. When Miami safety Ken Calhoun tipped away Turner Gill's two-point pass to Jeff Smith, Osborne received national praise for his guts. But he waited 11 more years to finish No. 1.
