BREAKING POINT

Stillwater, Okla. | Oct. 20, 1951

A step backward in racial integration: The 1951 season of Drake halfback Johnny Bright, one of the first postwar black stars, came to a shocking halt against Missouri Valley Conference rival Oklahoma A&M. After Bright handed the ball off and moved out of the play, Cowboys lineman Wilbanks Smith coldcocked Bright, breaking his jaw. The Des Moines Register published a series of photos of the mugging that won a Pulitzer Prize.
