The first of the 41 bowl matchups this postseason is set, as a source told ESPN's Brett McMurphy that Western Michigan (7-5) will face Middle Tennessee State (7-5) in the Bahamas Bowl on Dec. 24. Penn State's Carl Nassib was named Big Ten defensive player of the year. Nassib leads nation with 15.5 sacks despite missing almost all of the last two games with a shoulder injury. Incredible season for the senior, who is a former walk-on.

With the official NCAA determination on 5-7 bowl teams and Missouri's decision to decline a bid, Nebraska and Minnesota are in line to receive invites. Illinois needs Georgia State and South Alabama to lose this week.

USC players ecstatic over Helton's hiring

Missouri won't accept bowl bid

Despite finishing 5-7, the Tigers had a chance to participate in a bowl game, but Missouri AD Mack Rhoades released a statement saying "our focus remains on identifying the right leader for our program and moving forward with the transition process." Gary Pinkel, the all-time winningest coach in school history, announced earlier this season he would resign at the end of this campaign.

Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson and Florida State running back Dalvin Cook were the only unanimous selections to the ACSMA All-ACC first team. Now the big question -- who will win ACC Player of the Year honors when the award is announced Wednesday? The two Heisman candidates figure to be the front-runners.

Did USC get it right with Clay Helton hire?

"Today, the decision feels questionable. Hiring Helton isn't going to be judged a sure-thing by anyone. ... Yet that immediate, emotional reaction can have a short shelf life when a coach starts leading his team," writes Ted Miller. Hire lacks pizzazz

Optimistic preseason expectations for Florida State were for the Seminoles to finish 10-2. After a rout of Florida, Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher expressed his pleasure that FSU grew into the team he believed it could become by season's end. While there is still a chance for 11 wins and a major bowl in 2015, this "rebuilding" year has the Noles poised to pursue another ACC and national championship in 2016.

Justin Fuente said he had many offers to leave Memphis but turned them down until Virginia Tech contacted him to fill the vacancy left by the retiring Frank Beamer: "We all know you don't replace a legend in coaching. You hope to build on what he's done." Fuente went 9-3 this season.

When North Carolina and Clemson play in the ACC championship game, Broyles Award finalists Gene Chizik and Brent Venables will be faced with a similar task: slowing down a high-powered offense. Both coordinators have been so impressive, it is tough to say who has done a better job. Is it Chizik, who transformed one of the worst defenses in the country a year ago into a group giving up an average of 100 yards and 19 points fewer per game? Or is it Venables, who replaced eight Clemson starters and still has the No. 8 defense in the country?

Saban's shadow looms large over SEC

Mark Richt is out at Georgia, and Les Miles was nearly let go at LSU, even though both have won more than 70 percent of their games. The reason: Nick Saban, who is 35-5 in his last 40 games against SEC foes. Beat 'Bama or bust
