Manuel and Jameis Winston. Coach Jimbo Fisher said he will name a starter when he is ready, and that might be after the Week 1 game against Texas State. Everett Golson and Sean Maguire are still competing.

Beckman vows to fight back

Fired Illinois football coach Tim Beckman released a statement that read in part: "First and foremost, I firmly deny the implications in Mike [Thomas]'s statements that I took any action that was not in the best interests of the health, safety and well-being of my players. The health and well-being of our student athletes is of paramount importance to me, and any statement made to the contrary is utterly false."
