EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State quarterback Jeff Smoker is questionable for Saturday's game at Notre Dame because of a bruised toe.

Smoker injured his right big toe in the first quarter of Saturday's 20-19 loss to Louisiana Tech. He also sustained a rib injury and left the game in the second quarter.

Smoker's chances of playing against Notre Dame are 50-50, Michigan State coach John L. Smith said Monday.

If Smoker can't play, redshirt freshman Drew Stanton, not junior Damon Dowdell, would start against Notre Dame. Dowdell replaced Smoker on Saturday.

Smoker, the leading passer in Michigan State history, was 12-for-19 for 138 yards against Louisiana Tech. He is 54-for-85 for 813 yards and six touchdowns this season, and 437-for-747 for 6,356 yards and 46 TDs in his career.

The senior was reinstated to the team before the season after being suspended last year because of a substance-abuse problem.
