Purdue jumps five spots to fifth
Although quarterback Kyle Orton was less than perfect Saturday, he did enough to help Purdue defeat Penn State and climb five more spots to No. 5 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll released Sunday.
The Boilermakers (5-0), who had moved up five spots to No. 10 last week, held on for a 20-13 victory over the Nittany Lions. Orton, a Heisman Trophy candidate, threw his first two interceptions of the season but passed for 275 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown to Taylor Stubblefield.
Southern California (5-0) maintained its top ranking following a 23-17 triumph over Pac-10 Conference rival California (3-1). The Trojans received 45 of a possible 61 first-place votes for 1,509 points. California dropped from seventh to ninth with the loss.
Led by 225 rushing yards from true freshman Adrian Peterson, No. 2 Oklahoma posted a 12-0 victory over Texas, which entered the game ranked fifth. The Sooners (5-0) closed to within 24 points of USC in the poll on the strength of 15 first-place votes. The Longhorns fell six spots to No. 11 with the loss.
Idle Miami (4-0), which claimed the final first-place vote, moved up a spot to No. 3, a position formerly occupied by Georgia, which suffered a 19-14 loss to Tennessee on Saturday. The Bulldogs (4-1) slipped five spots to eighth while the Volunteers climbed three spots to No. 14.
Auburn (6-0) moved up three places to No. 4 after a 52-7 rout of Louisiana Tech, and Virginia (5-0) climbed three spots to No. 6 following a 30-10 triumph over Clemson.
Florida State (4-1) and Utah (5-0) ascended one spot each to seventh and 10th, respectively. Michigan (5-1) also climbed one place to 13th with a 27-24 triumph over Minnesota (5-1), which fell seven spots to 20th.
Wisconsin (6-0) beat Ohio State, 24-13, on its home turf and moved into the 12th spot. The Buckeyes (3-2), meanwhile, fell eight spots to No. 23.
Oklahoma State (5-0) climbed six spots to No. 15, followed by West Virginia (4-1), Louisville (4-0), Boise State (5-0) and Arizona State (5-0).
Louisiana State (4-2) rebounded from a 45-16 loss to Georgia last week with a 24-21 victory over Florida (3-2), climbing three spots to No. 21. The Gators fell a whopping 10 spots to 22nd.
Missouri (4-1) and Southern Mississippi entered the poll at No. 24 and No. 25, respectively, as Maryland and North Carolina State dropped out.
