William & Mary, James Madison win nail-biters

MISSOULA, Mont. -- Craig Ochs passed for 251 yards and three touchdowns, and Lex Hilliard ran for 107 yards and two more scores to lead Montana to a 47-17 victory over New Hampshire on Saturday in the NCAA Division I-AA quarterfinals.

Montana (11-2) will play the winner Sam Houston State at home next Saturday. In the other semifinal, James Madison (11-2) will travel to William & Mary (11-2). James Madison beat Furman 14-13, and William & Mary edged Delaware 44-38 in double overtime.

Ochs completed 16 consecutive passes during a stretch from late in the first quarter to early in the third quarter to help Montana take a 37-3 lead.

Jefferson Heidelberger caught seven passes for 107 yards and a TD for Montana, and Levander Segars also caught a scoring pass. Hilliard scored on runs of 7 and 4 yards and Justin Green had a 1-yard TD run.

Ricky Santos passed for 347 yards and a TD for New Hampshire (10-3).

Sam Houston State 35, Eastern Washington 34
CHENEY, Wash. -- Jason Mathenia caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Dustin Long as time expired Saturday to give ninth-ranked Sam Houston State a 35-34 victory over No. 14 Eastern Washington in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

The Bearkats (11-2) drove 75 yards for the winning score after Vincent Cartwright blocked a 37-yard field-goal attempt by Skyler Allen with 43 seconds left to play. Lance Garner converted the extra-point kick for the winning point.

Long, a senior transfer from Texas A&M, completed 38 of 61 passes for 478 yards and three touchdowns.

Darius Washington carried the ball 35 times for 156 yards and three touchdowns for Eastern Washington. Erik Meyer completed 21 of 30 passes for 233 yards and ran for a touchdown for the Eagles, who finished 9-4.

William & Mary 44, Delaware 38, 2OT

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Jon Smith scored on a 7-yard run in the second overtime to lift William & Mary past 2003 champion Delaware (9-4).

William & Mary, down 31-10 at halftime, forced overtime on Lang Campbell's 15-yard touchdown pass to Joe Nicholas with 1:56 left in regulation.

Campbell was 30-of-53 for 342 yards and three touchdowns. Dominique Thompson caught nine passes for 185 yards, and Nicholas had 11 receptions for 94 yards.

Omar Cuff had 170 yards and two TDs on 27 carries for Delaware.

James Madison 14, Furman 13

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- James Madison's Raymond Hines tied it with 28 seconds left on a 1-yard run on fourth down, and David Rabil added the winning extra point.

Justin Rascati was 5-of-8 on the winning 74-yard drive, including passes of 16 and 11 yards to D.D. Boxley. Rascati's 14-yard throw to Ardon Bransford brought James Madison to Furman's 8 with 54 seconds left.

Furman's Scott Beckler lined up for a clinching 43-yard field goal with 5 minutes remaining, but James Madison's Demetrius Shambley blocked the low kick.

Furman finished the season 10-3.
