Ex-CMU player extradited on murder charge
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- A former Central Michigan University football player has been extradited from Florida and arraigned on second-degree murder and other charges in the fatal beating of a man outside a bar in June.
Michael L. Thomas, 23, of Fort Myers, Fla., also is charged with involuntary manslaughter, assault with intent to do great bodily harm and perjury. Isabella County Trial Court Judge William Rush ordered Thomas to remain in jail on a $1.1 million bond.
Rush set a scheduling conference for Monday.
Thomas is the last of six people to be arraigned on second-degree murder charges in the attack on DeMarcus Graham, 26, of Flint, who died 19 days after being beaten outside a Mount Pleasant bar on June 25, 2004. Three others, including two former Chippewas players, are charged with perjury.
Thomas, a former strong safety for the Chippewas, was arrested in Fort Myers on Sept. 15 and was brought to Mount Pleasant on Saturday.
Others charged with murdering Graham are ex-players James King, 23, of Oak Park; Demond Petty, 21, of Detroit; Jerry Seymour, 20, of Miramar, Fla.; and Spencer Lewis, 23, of Lathrup Village. The sixth murder defendant is Jimmy Donald, 23, of Saginaw.
The six and three others face perjury and other charges in Graham's death and for their statements during a yearlong grand jury investigation.
