The Bottom 10 gets simple
Paris and Nicole guide us through 2005's final look at the bottom of the college football barrel.

The Bottom 10 inspirational thought of the week:
Somewhere along the way
I got caught up in the race
I kept spinning and turning
Lost myself my hope my faith
We're always wanting more than what we have
And what I've learned is all I really need are
The simple things
That come without a price
The simple things
Like happiness joy and love in my life
I've seen it all from so many sides
And I hope you would agree
The best things in life
Are the simple things
-- Joe Cocker, "The Simple Things"
No, the Bottom 10 wasn't canceled. It just took a little holiday break before the season finale. It should come as no surprise that Thanksgiving is the Bottom 10's favorite holiday. After surviving another season of digesting turkeys on the field, it's important to spend some quality time dining on the Bottom 10's bird of choice.

In B-10's absence, Buffalo and Rice both picked up victories, leaving only New Mexico State and Temple with nothing in the win column this season. So, in a Bottom 10 first, the Aggies and Owls will share the final No. 1 spot. Choosing between that duo is like choosing between Paris and Nicole -- it just can't be done.
There were so many candidates for the highly coveted final No. 5 spot. Did any team fail to live up to its preseason hype more than Tennessee? Remember the preseason talk about Purdue winning the Big Ten? Who would have thought Texas A&M wouldn't finish the season bowl-eligible? But no major college team can compare to Washington. Sure, the Huskies improved their Pac-10 win total this season, but the jump from zero to one just isn't very impressive.

The final Bottom 10 of 2005 is returning to its musical roots and keeping things simple this week. So, with apologies to Steve Harvey, here's this week's Bottom 10:
| ESPN.com's Bottom 10 | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RANK | TEAM | Record | COMMENT | |
|
1. | New Mexico State | 0-12 | "Simple As That": The Aggies have more losses than any other team in the country, so placing them at No. 1 is as simple and correct as pushing "Eject" when an Alabama CD is playing. |
|
1. | Temple | 0-11 | "It's Just That Simple": You don't need Wilco to tell you that putting the Owls at No. 1 is simple when they are No. 117 in scoring offense and scoring defense. |
|
3. | Kent State | 1-10 | "Clear and Simple": Remedy is the artist and also what Doug Martin needs to find in Kent. That won't be easy. Division I-AA Southeast Missouri State was the Golden Flashes' only victim in 2005. |
|
4. | Duke | 1-10 | "Simple Kind of Life": There is No Doubt the Blue Devils belong when their only 2005 win is over Division I-AA VMI. |
|
5. |
Washington |
2-9 | "Escape Is So Simple": Don't know whether the Huskies listen to the Cowboy Junkies, but winning more than one Pac-10 game would facilitate their escape. |
|
6. | Buffalo | 1-10 | "Simple Truth": Even Kellie Coffey knows that since the Bulls' only win is over Kent State. The simple truth is Buffalo's fortunate not to be in the top 5. |
|
7. | Rice | 1-10 | "Simple Song": Since the Owls have only one win and are ranked No. 116 in scoring defense, even Texan Lyle Lovett wouldn't write a protest song about Rice's position in the Bottom 10. |
|
8. | Syracuse | 1-10 | "Those Simple Things": The Orange are so bad they deserve to be saddled with the Right Said Fred song reference. |
|
9. | Idaho | 2-9 | "A Simple Game": Actually, it's not so simple for the Vandals. Lyrics from another Moody Blues song might be more appropriate: "Breathe deep the gathering gloom." |
|
10. | Florida Atlantic | 2-9 | "Simple Twist of Fate": Sure, the Owls finished with only two wins, but it was a 52-6 loss to former F_U companion Florida International that links Bob Dylan, FAU and the Bottom 10. |
Waiting list: Illinois (2-9), Kentucky (3-8), Mississippi (3-8), Mississippi State (3-8), North Texas (2-9), Purdue (5-6), San Jose State (3-8), Tennessee (5-6), Texas A&M (5-6), UNLV (2-9) and Utah State (3-8).
