Bell takes over as Jacksonville head coach

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jacksonville plans to introduce former Florida quarterback Kerwin Bell as the program's second football coach.

Bell, who threw for over 7,500 yards from 1984-87 with the Gators, has signed a four-year contract. He becomes the second coach in the nine-year history of the non-scholarship, Division I-AA team.

Steve Gilbert, the program's first coach, was fired in November. He went 35-54 in nine seasons.

For the last five years, Bell coached at Ocala Trinity Catholic High School. He led the Celtics to the Class BB championship game the past two years, winning the state title in 2005 and putting together a 27-game winning streak that ended last month in the title game.

Bell was also an offensive coordinator for the Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts and a graduate assistant under Steve Spurrier at Florida.
