Broussard returns to Washington St. as RB coach
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Steve Broussard, one of the top backs in Washington State University history, is set to take the field for the Cougars once again -- as running backs coach.
Broussard was hired away from Portland State without an interview Thursday by coach Bill Doba to replace Kelly Skipper, who was named the previous day as the new offense line coach of the NFL Oakland Raiders.
"It's good to bring another Cougar home," Doba said in a news release.
He told The Spokesman-Review of Spokane he didn't interview Broussard but hired him partly on the basis of a recommendation from one of his former assistants, Idaho coach Robb Akey, who did interview Broussard.
Akey was replaced in January as the Cougars' defensive ends coach by Marty Long, who spent the past three seasons in that position at the University of Nevada.
"I knew [Skipper] was going in for the interview and Doba had always stressed an interest that if Skip leaves, that I may have a chance to come there," Broussard told the newspaper. "I'm kind of in awe a little bit at how fast it went. At the same time, it's a huge opportunity for me and I'm looking forward to taking advantage and bringing a little attitude."
At one point Broussard held nine Washington state career or single-season records. He finished his four years with the Cougars third on the school's all-time rushing list and fifth in career receiving.
He was drafted in the first round in 1990 by the Atlanta Falcons, moved to the Cincinnati Bengals for the 1994 season and played the rest of his nine years in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks.
After two years of high school coaching he became running backs coach at Portland State for a season and was wide receivers coach for the Vikings the past two years.
