PROVO, Utah -- Brigham Young linebacker Terrance Hooks pleaded guilty to misdemeanors for kicking in two apartment doors while searching for someone who threw water balloons at his girlfriend.

Hooks, who is suspended for one game because of his arrest April 7, pleaded guilty to criminal mischief and criminal trespass. In return, prosecutors dropped felony burglary charges.

Hooks was sentenced Tuesday to 15 days in a work-diversion program.

"I would like to apologize. I have taken responsibility for my actions," he told 4th District Judge Fred Howard.

Coach Bronco Mendenhall suspended Hooks for BYU's season opener against Arizona on Sept. 1. Teammate Vic So'oto, who was arrested but not charged, was also suspended for the opener.

Mendenhall ordered Hooks to perform 40 hours of community service.

Police said Hooks was searching for two people who threw water balloons from an apartment balcony and hit his girlfriend.

Hooks knocked one door off its hinges but it was the wrong apartment. He went to another apartment and kicked that door in when nobody answered, police said.

When officers arrived, Hooks was on his way to the bedroom where people suspected of throwing balloons had retreated, police said.
