STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford Cardinal linebacker Fred Campbell will
stop playing football after undergoing surgery to repair a
fractured vertebrae in his neck.
Campbell, the Cardinal's starting middle linebacker, was injured
in Stanford's game Saturday against San Jose State. He
underwent the operation Monday at Stanford Hospital.
"I know how much of a disappointment this is for Fred," coach
Jim Harbaugh said. "But we're very proud of him and what he has
accomplished and what he has meant to our team. We're relieved that
his neurological health will be normal and that he will have a full
and complete recovery."
"Fred is a warrior," Harbaugh said, "and he will always be a
part of our team."
