Sexual assault charge dismissed against former TCU player
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Prosecutors have dismissed a sexual assault charge against a former TCU football player accused of raping an unconscious 18-year-old woman in a dorm room.
Lorenzo Labell Jones was arrested in 2006, along with former TCU basketball players Virgil Allen Taylor and Shannon Monroe Behling, after a woman reported that Taylor sexually assaulted her.
A charge of aggravated sexual assault by threat against Jones was dismissed Friday by the Tarrant County District Attorney's Office. According to court documents, there wasn't enough evidence.
The cases against Taylor and Behling are pending. In interviews with police after the alleged attacks, Taylor implicated Behling, and Behling implicated Jones.
Police have said Taylor lured the woman to his dorm on the pretext of paying her back for a hamburger. The woman told police she was given a sports drink that caused her to pass out before waking up briefly to find Taylor having sex with her.
Jones ended up spending about a year in jail in separate stints after he was arrested on a charge of jumping bail. Still facing that charge, Jones was released Monday on a personal recognizance bond.
Marcus Norman, Jones' attorney, said he expects the remaining charge to be dismissed. Jones' arrest in the sexual assault case violated probation in a misdemeanor assault case in Collin County.
"He is ready to move on," Norman said. "He wants to resume his football career, not at TCU but some other school. He wants to go back to school and finish his degree."
