West Virginia QB White misses Syracuse game with head injury

West Virginia quarterback Pat White was ruled out to play against Syracuse on Saturday.

White, a Heisman candidate throughout the 2007 season for the Mountaineers (3-2, 1-0 Big East), suffered a head injury while taking a hit to the helmet last week in a 24-17 victory over Rutgers.

Doctors ruled White, who never ran plays in practice this week, did not sustain a concussion.

"It really doesn't seem that bad, but we just don't want to jar it around,'' coach Bill Stewart said on Friday, according to The Charleston Gazette. "And there are times when he says he just doesn't feel right.''

Jarrett Brown, a redshirt junior, got the second start of his career. He led West Virginia to a triple-overtime win over Rutgers in the 2006 season finale.

Brown has been used as a running back and wide receiver the past two games and has come in at quarterback in both games after White left with injuries.

White has dominated Syracuse the past two seasons. He ran for 247 yards on 15 carries two years ago in Morgantown and amassed 237 total yards last season at the Carrier Dome.

West Virginia struggled without White. The 17-6 victory marked the fewest points for West Virginia (4-2, 2-0 Big East) in a win since a 15-7 victory over Syracuse in 2005.

Brown threw a 12-yard TD pass to Jock Sanders in the second quarter.
