Another college football coach has been shown the door, this time in the Mid-American Conference.
Eastern Michigan coach Jeff Genyk was fired Monday morning, the university announced. Genyk will coach the Eagles for their final game against Central Michigan on Friday. According to the Ann Arbor News, athletic director Derrick Gragg made the decision after speaking with university president Susan Martin. "Winning consistently in football has been a challenge for our institution long before the arrival of coach Genyk," Gragg said in a statement. "I credit coach Genyk and his entire staff for working tirelessly in attempting to improve our program, but we have not met our aspirations for football." Gragg said a search for Genyk's replacement will begin immediately and that former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr will assist in the process as an unpaid adviser. Eastern Michigan is 15-42 -- 2-9 this season -- and 12-26 in the MAC in Genyk's five years as coach. The Eagles have never won more than four games under him and have never finished higher than third in the MAC West. Eastern Michigan will pay out the remaining value of Genyk's contract, which runs through 2010. Genyk's best season came in 2007 when the Eagles were 4-8 overall and 3-4 in the MAC, good for a tie for third in the West Division. That season also saw his team win the Michigan MAC Trophy for the second time after the Eagles defeated both Western Michigan and Central Michigan.Graham Watson is an ESPN.com college football blogger.
