Bowling Green hires Clawson

Dave Clawson was named Friday as the new head coach at Bowling Green after spending this past season at Tennessee as the Volunteers' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach."It is an honor and a thrill to be given this opportunity to coach football at Bowling Green State University," Clawson said. "To be named the head coach of a football program that is filled with a rich history is a dream come true. " When he came to Tennessee, Clawson, 41, was viewed as a potential successor to Phillip Fulmer. He had been in the running for the Boston College head coaching job a year earlier and was taking over the Vols' offense from David Cutcliffe, who left to take the Duke head coaching job. But almost from the outset, things went south at Tennessee. The Vols struggled at quarterback and were unable to consistently move the ball, finishing 115th out of 119 teams in total offense. Fulmer was fired with three games remaining in the season, and Clawson wasn't retained by new coach Lane Kiffin. It was the only blip in an otherwise successful resume for Clawson, who was named Division I-AA Coach of the Year at both Richmond and Fordham in his previous two head coaching stops. He replaces Gregg Brandon, who was fired after going 6-6 and 4-4 in the Mid-American Conference this past season. Brandon was 44-30 in six years at Bowling Green, including a 31-17 record in the MAC. This is Clawson's first FBS head coaching assignment. Prior to taking the Tennessee offensive coordinator job, he was the head coach at Richmond from 2004 to 2007 and head coach at Fordham from 1999 to 2003. In his final season at Richmond, he led the Spiders to their best season in school history. They finished 11-3 and lost to eventual FCS national champion Appalachian State in the semifinals.
