Western Michigan rewards Cubit with new five-year contract

HOUSTON -- Western Michigan coach Bill Cubit agreed to a new five-year contract on Tuesday, the same day the Broncos lost to Rice 38-14 in the Texas Bowl.

Cubit, finishing his fourth season, will earn a base salary of $225,000 and another $150,000 each year for public, radio and television appearances, starting in 2009.

The Broncos (9-4) were seeking the first bowl victory and 10-win season in school history on Tuesday. Western Michigan lost to Cincinnati in the 2007 International Bowl and Cubit is the only coach to lead the program to two bowl appearances.

"Western Michigan has had enormous success during the four years Bill Cubit has been our head coach," athletics director Kathy Beauregard said. "We are so very proud and excited to announce that he will be leading our Broncos into the future."
