BC gives McGovern a promotion
Boston College promoted linebackers coach Bill McGovern to defensive coordinator, the school announced Thursday.
McGovern, who coached the linebackers for the past nine seasons, fills the vacancy left by Frank Spaziani after he was promoted to head coach on Jan. 13. The two of them are the most tenured members of the staff and are the lone holdovers from former coach Tom O'Brien's staff.
McGovern was Spaziani's second hire since taking over for former coach Jeff Jagodzinski. Spaziani recently hired former Navy coach Gary Tranquill as his offensive coordinator. There has been a lot of turnover since Jagodzinski was fired, as the Eagles still need to replace former offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr., and special teams/tight end coach Don Yanowsky, both whom resigned.
"Bill McGovern has truly earned this opportunity through his hard work and loyalty to the Boston College football program," Spaziani said in a prepared statement. "Our players respect Coach McGovern, and so do I. He is unquestionably the right person for this job."
The Boston College defense was among the best in the nation in 2008, ranking in the top 10 in the nation in seven defensive categories, and McGovern worked with ACC Defensive Player of the Year Mark Herzlich, who decided to put the NFL draft on hold and return for his senior season. McGovern also coached former linebacker Brian Toal, who had an injury laden career but was the 2004 Big East Rookie of the Year.
"It's a dream come true to become the defensive coordinator at Boston College," McGovern said in the release. "I have enjoyed working with Coach Spaz tremendously over the course of the past nine seasons. My family and I are thrilled to remain a part of this program, and I am extremely excited about the challenge."
