Transfer leaves hole in Eagles' offense
The move leaves the Eagles without any quarterbacks who have thrown a pass at the Football Bowl Subdivision level. Both Justin Tuggle, a redshirt freshman, and Codi Boek, a junior who transferred last year from American River Junior College after starting his career in 2006 at Idaho State, were competing with Davis for the starting job this spring.
Davis was the only one who had starting experience; he took over against Wake Forest last year for injured starter Chris Crane.
Davis led the Eagles to an impressive come-from-behind win against the Demon Deacons in the final minute, and helped Boston College advance to the ACC championship game with a win against Maryland in the regular-season finale. He struggled, though, in the ACC title game and the Music City Bowl.
As a redshirt freshman last season, Davis completed 63-of-138 passes for 741 yards and six touchdowns, throwing four interceptions. Davis has not decided where he will transfer.
First-year coach Frank Spaziani now must turn to Tuggle and Boek, who was a fullback last year but returned to his original position this spring. Former coach Jeff Jagodzinski and the previous staff had high expectations for Tuggle, whose father, Jessie, played 14 seasons in the NFL and was selected to five Pro Bowls.
None of the quarterbacks, though, distinguished himself this spring. The arrival of true freshman Michael Marscovetra will help the position's depth.
It's been a tough offseason for BC, as the program learned last month that star linebacker and ACC Defensive Player of the Year Mark Herzlich was diagnosed with cancer.
