Southern Miss receiver DeAndre Brown will participate in the Golden Eagles' fall camp, which opens Wednesday, but he will not be allowed in contact drills.

Brown also will remain in the protective boot when he is not on the practice field.

On July 15, it was learned that Brown reaggrevated the broken left leg he suffered during last year's New Orleans Bowl. Brown had been placed in a protective boot and coach Larry Fedora was optimistic that he would be back in the lineup for the Sept. 5 opener against Alcorn State.

Fedora told ESPN.com via phone on Tuesday that Brown recently had an X-ray and doctors were pleased with his progress. However, they're still being cautious with his recovery.

"If I could have him back on the field today, I would," Fedora said. "And he's upset because he wants to be out there participating. I still think he's on track to be ready for the start of the season from everything I've been told."

Brown will do light receiver drills, but will be held out of one-on-one's, seven-on-seven's or full-squad scrimmages.

Fedora said he has no timetable for Brown's return to practice.

"The doctors and trainers told me they'd let me know as soon as they know," Fedora said. "The most important thing for us is to make sure he's feeling OK."
