Robinson misses fifth day of practice
STILLWATER, Okla. -- Starting quarterback Zac Robinson will miss Oklahoma State's first scrimmage Saturday after he was held out of practice for the fifth straight day Thursday, coach Mike Gundy said.
Gundy said the mandated rest for Robinson is more of a precaution as he hopes to settle on a backup quarterback. Alex Cate and Brandon Weeden are in a close battle to claim the backup position behind Robinson.
"Zac could practice tomorrow, but I don't want him to," Gundy said. "There's no reason to. I want those backups to have to run the offense."
Gundy said that he has been frustrated that Cade and Weeden haven't claimed the backup role behind Robinson, who passed for 3,064 yards and 25 touchdowns and rushed for 562 yards and eight more touchdowns for the Cowboys last season.
"They've been the same," Gundy said. "They both have done better, but they both make mistakes. Somebody has to take the job."
Robinson rode an exercise bicycle along the sidelines at the Cowboys' morning practice, wearing tennis shoes and wishing he could have practiced, he said. He has a slight pull in his lower leg, just below the knee.
The Cowboys open the season Sept. 5 against Georgia.
"I feel a little better. It's getting better every day," Robinson said. "I'll be ready to go whenever they tell me to. I know by game time I'll be ready."
