Gators' Meyer still on job as recruiter

With national signing day less than a month away, Florida coach Urban Meyer continues to be "actively involved in recruiting" for the Gators despite announcing Dec. 27 he would take a leave of absence for health reasons.

Meyer, who was hospitalized late last month with chest pain after the SEC championship game, also has been working to help complete the Gators' coaching staff after the departures of three assistants.

Florida spokesman Steve McClain told reporters that Meyer's workload has been limited to mostly phone calls since announcing the leave.

Offensive coordinator Steve Addazio was named interim head coach.

National signing day is Feb. 3, and details of Meyer's leave were still uncertain, McClain said Thursday.

"There's not really a timetable on that," McClain said.

Mack Brown, a running back from Martin Luther King High School in Lithonia, Ga., is among the Gators' 21 commitments who make up one of the country's top recruiting classes for 2010.

Brown, ranked No. 17 on the ESPNU 150, told the Orlando Sentinel that he's talked to Meyer twice since the coach announced his intentions to take a break.

"He said that he had to step away to regain his happiness and recharge, but that he'll be back and ready to go," Brown said.

According to the Sentinel, Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley has said Meyer was to be barred -- for his own good -- from the athletic department offices as of Jan. 2.

"You can't coach when your chest hurts," Foley said last month. "You can't live your life when your chest hurts."
