Two Spartans sentenced to jail time
Jenrette, dismissed from the team in November, was sentenced to 90 days in jail. He pled guilty last month to misdemeanor aggravated assault and misdemeanor assault stemming from a Nov. 22 incident at a campus residence hall, which took place following a fraternity potluck event.
Smith was sentenced to five days in jail plus 18 months of probation and 150 hours of community service after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit assault and battery.
Two other current Michigan State players, cornerback Chris L. Rucker and offensive lineman J'Michael Deane, were sentenced to 12 months probation and 150 hours of community service for their roles in the incident. Former Spartans defensive end Jamiihr Williams received 18 months probation and 150 hours of community service. All three men had pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and battery.
Eleven current or former Michigan State players have pleaded guilty in the altercation with members of the Iota Phi Theta fraternity, and eight have been sentenced. Seven players remain on the team but indefinitely suspended, while two were dismissed and two transferred.
Jenrette and Smith are the first two players to receive jail time. Former running back Glenn Winston, reportedly at the center of the incident with Jenrette, will be sentenced Monday and faces up to a year in jail. Winston was dismissed with Jenrette on Nov. 24.
Jenrette will begin serving his sentence in April after visiting colleges where he can potentially continue his football career. Smith will serve his time during weekends that will be determined later.
Michigan State spokesman John Lewandowski released a statement last week that head coach Mark Dantonio won't reevaluate the players' status until all the legal cases are resolved. Defensive tackle Oren Wilson is the last player scheduled to be sentenced on March 31.
Michigan State opens spring practice Tuesday.
