Jewel Hampton to have ACL surgery
Both Hampton and linebacker Bruce Davis suffered ACL injuries that will require season-ending surgeries, coach Kirk Ferentz said Tuesday.
Hampton, who set an Iowa freshman record with seven rushing touchdowns in 2008, missed the entire 2009 season with an ACL tear in his right knee. He suffered the injury in the second half of the Arizona game.
Rittenberg: Shorthanded Again
For the second consecutive season, Iowa is scrambling to find enough capable players to carry the football, ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg writes. Blog
"He's very disappointed. He's invested a lot. He's one of the competitive guys on our football team," Ferentz said. "It's not the end of football life, necessarily, but it just feels that way and it's going to feel that way for a couple of days I'm sure."
Hampton was suspended for the opener against Eastern Illinois following an arrest in June for public intoxication, but made his season debut Sept. 11 against Iowa State.
Davis, a backup linebacker who recorded five tackles this year, also has an ACL tear.
"We've got Adam, and anyone else that wants to volunteer," Ferentz said.
True freshman Marcus Coker should be ready to return this week after suffering a shoulder injury early in preseason camp."
