Texas' Sam Acho wins Campbell Trophy
NEW YORK -- Texas defensive end Sam Acho is the winner of the William V. Campbell Trophy, given to college football's top scholar-athlete.
All the finalists receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. Acho will receive a $25,000 scholarship.
Acho, a starter the past two seasons, is a two-time member of the Big 12 all-academic team. He led the Longhorns in sacks with nine and tackles for loss with 17 this season.
The other finalists were Boston College offensive tackle Anthony Castonzo; Indiana quarterback Ben Chappell, Columbia linebacker Alex Gross; Stanford linebacker Owen Marecic; California linebacker Mike Mohamed; Bucknell linebacker Travis Nissley; Minnesota Duluth running back Isaac Odim; Mississippi State offensive tackle Derek Sherrod; Colorado offensive tackle Nate Solder; Notre Dame offensive guard Chris Stewart; Saint Thomas (Minn.) halfback Ben Wartman; and Penn State guard Stefen Wisniewski.
Last year's Campbell Trophy winner was Florida quarterback Tim Tebow.
