Russell Wilson still undecided
Former North Carolina State quarterback Russell Wilson hasn't finalized a decision where -- or if -- he will play college football this season, a source said.
Wilson is not likely to have a decision this week, the source said, as he struggles with leaving baseball, when his desire has always been to play two sports. "There are two magnets pulling this kid in opposite directions," the source said.
Wilson, a second baseman for the Asheville Tourists (the Class A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies), is hitting .220 with 77 strikeouts in 168 at-bats in his first year as a professional. The Rockies picked Wilson in the fourth round of the 2010 amateur draft.
Wilson has enjoyed visits to both Auburn and Wisconsin and would be eligible to play this fall at either school because he already has his undergraduate degree. He doesn't plan on making any other visits.
"It's a tough time for the kid," the source said of Wilson's decision-making.
Wilson threw for 3,663 yards and 28 touchdowns last season at NC State, but was granted a release when Wolfpack coach Tom O'Brien, frustrated with Wilson dividing his commitments between two sports, decided to name Mike Glennon the starter for the upcoming season.
The Tourists begin their All-Star break Monday. "It's just a matter of working through in his mind the full-time pursuit of baseball versus the potential in football," the source said.
